The Sisters of St. Joseph

Since answering Bishop Verot's call in 1866, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Saint Augustine have been trailblazers in Florida's history. Transforming Father Miguel O'Reilly's property into their school and convent, the first eight Sisters of Saint Joseph of Saint Augustine overcame challenges to become the first Catholic order to minister to former enslaved Black people in America after the Civil War. Their commitment has expanded across various missions, including schools, hospitals, and homes for children. Upholding their original directive, the Sisters continue to undertake “any task of which a woman is capable”, leaving an indelible mark on the community they serve today.
